How to Perform Shaligram Puja at Home: Vidhi & Benefits

4 mins read Published onJul 08, 2025

Shaligram Shila is considered Sakshat Lord Vishnu Swaroop and is naturally Jagrut (awakened). Because it is already awakened, one does not need to perform the rituals of invocation or Pran Prathistha Puja. Worshipping the Shaligram daily with devotion is believed to bring peace, prosperity, positivity, and divine blessings into the home.

What are the Benefits of Shaligram Puja?

The Vishnu Swaroopi Shaligrama holds immense energies which can transform a devotee's life completely. According to ancient scriptures, the benefits include:

  1. Abundant Blessings: As mentioned in the Puranas, a devotee who worships the Shaligram Shila with pure devotion regularly is blessed abundantly with happiness, immense prosperity, wealth, and success.
  2. Divine Presence: According to the Brahmavaivarta Purana, Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi reside in the place where Shaligram Shila is worshipped every day.
  3. Meritorious Rewards: The Skanda Purana mentions that worshipping the Shaligram during the month of Kartik blesses the devotee meritoriously, offering the same benefits as performing various Yagnas and visiting pilgrimages.

Essential Puja Samagri (Items Required)

Before starting, ensure you have the following sacred items:

  1. Lord Shaligram Shila
  2. Tulsi Leaves & Tulsi Mala
  3. Ganga Jal & Panchamrit (mixture of milk, curd, water, honey, and ghee)
  4. Copper Plate, Kusha Grass, and Cloth
  5. Ghee Lamp, Sandalwood paste, Dhoop, and Incense sticks
  6. Fresh flowers, Fruits, and Mithai (sweets) for Bhog

Simple Daily Shaligram Puja (If time is limited)

For devotees unable to perform an elaborate ritual daily, this simple method ensures the Shila is honored:

  1. Keep the Shaligram on a copper plate.
  2. Wash it with water and apply a sandalwood tilak.
  3. Offer a fresh Tulsi leaf and light an incense stick.
  4. Offer obeisance and chant Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya 108 times.

The Elaborate Shodashopachara Puja (16-Step Worship)

For special occasions like Ekadashi or Tulsi Vivah, perform the complete Vedic ritual:

Step 1: Altar Setup and Purification: Wake up early, bathe, and wear fresh clothes. Clean the altar and set the Shaligram on a copper plate containing 9 betel leaves. Perform Achamaniyam by consuming three spoonfuls of water from your right palm to purify the mind, body, and spirit.

Step 2: Deep Jyoti and Sankalpa: Light a ghee lamp (Diya Batti) to symbolize victory over darkness. Meditate on Lord Ganesh to remove obstacles, and perform Sankalpa (intention of the prayer) to merge with the divine energy.

Step 3: The 16 Offerings (Shodashopachara) Through meditation and chanting, invite the presence of the divine Shaligram into your home. Offer the following with devotion:

  1. Asana & Snanam: Offer a seat and bathe the deity.
  2. Vastram & Yagnoveetam: Offer fresh cloth and sacred thread.
  3. Gandham, Pushpam & Dhoop: Apply sandalwood paste/tilak, offer fresh flowers, and light incense.
  4. Naivedya & Tambulam: Offer food (bhog) and betel leaf.
  5. Pradakshina: Conclude with circumambulation and bowing with respect.

Conclusion and Closing Mantras

After completing the puja, sit calmly and chant "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya" 108 times using a Tulsi mala. Surrender everything at the Lotus Feet of Lord Narayana with a pure heart. Cleanliness of mind and soul, along with the purity of the altar, plays a pivotal role in displaying true devotion (bhav) toward the deity.
